Bite the bullet and brave the cold

11/7/2011

I haven’t been shooting much lately. There is a few reasons for that, shifting house, lacking mojo and its been freezing cold.

On Sunday morning, I set the alarm, and quickly got out of bed before I could realise it was cold.

I headed out to Dookie, and went to a location I had spotted a few months ago. Once I was in place, I had to wait.

In the end, the sunrise wasn’t spectacular, but the process of dragging myself out helped get some of my mojo back.

So stay tuned, hopefully there will be plenty more to come in the next few weeks

Winton round V8 Supercars

27/5/2011

I was lucky enough to be shooting for a local paper, the V8 Supercars at Winton Motor Raceway.

I’m a big V8 Supercars fan (GO FORD), and having been to plenty of races in the past, including the last 5 years at Winton, I knew what to expect.

Winton is a great little country race track.  The biggest advantage of the track is the fact you can see 90% of the track from most general admin viewing areas.

I spent 3 days at Winton. Friday included a couple of practice sessions, Saturday & Sunday both included practice, qualifying & a race.

I started out with some practice panning. Reducing shutter speeds, and trying to move with the subject to achieve a sharp shot, while blurring the background. The technique give the feeling of high speeds and your eye is drawn straight to the car. This is something that is very hard to do with shutter speeds that simply freeze the car. The shutter speed I used was a low as 1/30 sec

In the end, Jason Bright drove a fantastic race, with a great strategy. It was a very emotional win, with Bright’s team mate Jason Richards who is currently battling cancer, able to help celebrate on the podium.

A Foggy morning at Mt Major

23/4/2011

It has been a long time since I have set the alarm early for a sunrise shoot, but with the Easter long weekend offering plenty of sleep ins, I decided to use one up and set the alarm for 4am.

I had organised with a friend to head out together, so I knew I couldn’t just turn the alarm off.

I had gone for a drive the day before to scope out a few good locations, and headed towards Dookie and the foot of Mt Major.

Once set up, we had about an hour before sunrise, so I took a few star trails and long shutter speed moonlight shots.

Once the sun started to come up, we realised that the fog was starting to roll in, and it looked spectacular.

Once the sun was up, we went for a drive to see what else we could shoot, while the light was still soft and warm.

After all that, I got home about 8am and felt like I had achieved a days work before breakfast.

How can you make the Australian Formula 1 GP even better? Add a fantastic Aussie band to round out the weekend action.

I love the F1, so when it comes to Melbourne, i try to get down there. This year, to finish off the weekend, the Living End played a concert after the race had finished.
I didn’t have any special passes for this gig, but I did manage to find a couple of great locations to watch the guys from.
After shooting a few shots from up near the back, i realised that i could get pretty close to the stage, while still being behind the barrier. Once i found this second spot, i just had to keep shooting.
