Winton round V8 Supercars

I was lucky enough to be shooting for a local paper, the V8 Supercars at Winton Motor Raceway.

I’m a big V8 Supercars fan (GO FORD), and having been to plenty of races in the past, including the last 5 years at Winton, I knew what to expect.

Winton is a great little country race track.  The biggest advantage of the track is the fact you can see 90% of the track from most general admin viewing areas.

I spent 3 days at Winton. Friday included a couple of practice sessions, Saturday & Sunday both included practice, qualifying & a race.

I started out with some practice panning. Reducing shutter speeds, and trying to move with the subject to achieve a sharp shot, while blurring the background. The technique give the feeling of high speeds and your eye is drawn straight to the car. This is something that is very hard to do with shutter speeds that simply freeze the car. The shutter speed I used was a low as 1/30 sec

In the end, Jason Bright drove a fantastic race, with a great strategy. It was a very emotional win, with Bright’s team mate Jason Richards who is currently battling cancer, able to help celebrate on the podium.

Some really great shots here mate!

Looks so weird seeing the V8's coming through the S bends onto the straight when I'm used to the drift cars haha

what sort of shutter speeds were you getting down to with the panning?

Cheers,
Ryan

Thanks Ryan
Turn 1 & 2 are great spots for any action at Winton.
The shutter speeds got down to as low as 1/30sec. Not many keepers at that speed though, but the couple of keepers i got look fantastic.

Hi Tristen, liked your blog very much! There is a nice balance to the story, even though you are a Ford man! ( Boo! Haha). You got some fantastic images, your experiments with shutter and panning really paid-off! Congrats too on the paper gig. Hope you don't mind, I shared your blog on FB, my brother and family are big Winton and Ford fans and were there too. Cheers Cathy(Catchipix)
